- Tulips give way to summer roses

The Floral Fireworks tulips are coming to an end, as all good things must. In their place, the heavenly-scented old-fashioned roses that the garden is famous for are slowly beginning to blossom. They create a softer, more traditional mood in the garden, ideal as the warm summer afternoons become more frequent.

- Cerney House Tulip Festival 2005 Photos

Thank you to all those that visited the garden over the weekend. The sun shone most of the time and the tulips looked fabulous. We still have many only just starting out and the knot garden has fulfilled our expectations and more. If anyone missed out on a catalogue or wants to know more please contact Floral Fireworks on 01460 249025, or see their website: www.FloralFireworks.co.uk.

Thank you as well to Tony, Maggie, Mike and crew who patiently walked us through our first UK television filming of the garden. Not a sigh when we forgot what we had said previously. We are very excited about the program with Lorus Productions Ltd and can't wait until June to see the end result.

Not such a thank you to Tin Opener, the ram. He spent much of the time trying to persuade visitors that he had been starved for months and needed a better home! We are exhausted and I will return to the diary after a good rest and several soaking baths.

- Tulips

The tulips are beginning to come into their best time. The knot garden will be stunning over the next couple of weeks, as will the path beds, which are full of the various parrot tulips. The floral fireworks of lily flowered tulips under the old apple tree is about to explode and mummy's front border display - more formal than the other plantings is unbelievably bright from the main drive. I have found some varieties new to me that will be definite ones for future years - Snow parrot, orange favourite and black hero are all good enough to eat.

The rest of the garden is looking very pretty with other bulbs, primula and pulmonaria in abundance. The viburnum's are so heady in scent that I wonder why anyone sniffs anything else! We have managed to sow most vegetables before we go to France for a week and even planted potatoes. Now we just have to invent the 8-day week and we will be on top of everything.

We are about to move our sheep down to new pastures and I must hurry to help, before they visit our neighbour. On that subject, Mabel the Berkshire pig has returned for her second honeymoon next door and her babies have made the orchard their own.

On a sadder note Amy's kitten Millie has been gone for 2 weeks. I hate to think how a pet can disappear completely. We feel either a passer by fell in love with her or the fox has done his worse. Either way, Amy is shattered and I am at a loss as to what to tell her.
